Hangs when playing using IPX (2007-09-27 03:41)

I was thrilled to be able to get this game to work so I could share a first person shooter with my children. We are using DosBox 0.72 on Vista and winXP.

The Vista machine is an AMD 3000+ and works fine when plaing in single user mode. The other two XP machines are slower, a 2.4 GHz Celeron and an 800MHz PIII. The 800 MHz machine gets into a hung or unplayable state quite a bit. I cranked up the cpu cycles to 8000 on all 3 boxes.

When we play on the network, I run ipxnet startserver on the vista box. And IPXNET connect on the other two. It is quite playable, but there is noticable lag and we are all playing on a LAN on machines that are much faster than the 486's I remember playing on...

After a few minutes of play, all 3 machines hang. Do you think the 800 MHz machine is just a bad apple? Is there something I can do to make the gameplay more reliable?

Hexen running perfectly now on Dosbox 0.65. Make sure to increase cycles high enough for a fluent experience.

Matt's problem was that the version of DOSBOX he used didn't support protected mode, the new version does support it, but I expect the same problem as with Heretic, working good, but running slow...

Not yet tested by me though
