Also... (2008-05-30 23:18) MetalLefty
I'm also using vista, if that would effect anything.
Strange Glitch (2008-05-30 23:17) MetalLefty
Something Very Strange Happens, if i'm at data cube scene, I think the game thinks I'm pressing the arrow keys, and it just scrolls through the text. This Also Happens at pause menus. I'm using Dosbox 0.72.
Crash during exit (2008-01-08 12:13) Cube 8
It happens sometimes, not always.
Crash during exit (2008-01-08 12:08) Cube 8
I have v0.72. Just after pressing Quit, the game crashes and DOSBox stops responding. It doesn't even respond to Ctrl+F9 or Ctrl+F10. The only way to close it is press the windows key and force it close from task manager.
GUS sounds great (2007-08-14 17:28) Azure Fang
Couple alterations to my above config, use DirectDraw instead of OGL, use GUS drivers/pro patches for better performance/sound quality. If you grab the old patch to fix the cycle ceiling on games like Tyrian you can set cycles to Auto to eliminate all slowdowns completely.
PC specs for above settings (2006-10-05 22:14) Azure Fang
Sorry, should have included this ^^*

P4 3.00GHz HT, PC3200 1024MB dual channel RAM
Near perfect run, even Destruct mode! (2006-10-05 22:12) Azure Fang
Even using D-fend frontend to automate some configuration I've been able to get it to run great.

40000 cycles dynamic, 0 frameskip, ogl render, 63mb limit + EMS/XMS.

SB16 emu, 44.1KHz sample/opl rate, 100 prebuff, block size down to 512 to help with music slowdown and FX lag (to test difference, test blocksizes in setup's jukebox compared to normal setup screen). Music slowdowns still occur in high-draw areas.

Process priority set to highest.

Game settings to FM Sound, Soundblaster for FX, Pentium detail.

Runs perfectly smooth in "light beam" levels like Assassin or in Lord of the Game difficulty.
suggestion (2006-09-11 23:38) thll
In addition, setting buffer from 10 to 100 corrects music interruptions.
suggestion (2006-09-11 23:31) thll
Those who are complaining about performance issues can try setting core to dynamic and cycles to auto. This is the only config that runs the game smoothly on my p4 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram, win xp.
Works perfectly! (2006-03-06 03:13) ikkejw
Runs perfectly on my 3GHz CPU on High detail setting
CPU cycles: between 3000-8000
Frameskip: 1
Renderer: OpenGL

You might also want to try the hidden 'Laptop VGA' detail setting. Go to Setup.exe and highlight the Detail setting. Press 'W', it should now be in Wild mode. Start the game, and in-game press Esc and highlight the Detail setting again, but his time press the left arrow key. You should now have a detail mode between medium-high detail that works great even on my 25MHz 386.
I have no idea why this is a hidden option, really.
Destruct mini-game (2006-01-16 17:02) Kzer-za
On high detail and 15000 cycles with my 2Ghz AMD, 512 RAM it runs fine except for one thing: the mini-game you get by typing "destruct" at the title screen. This runs ridiculously slow, and if I turn up the cycles a lot, the music skips all over the place.
Runs great! 0.63 (2005-07-03 15:30) AstralStorm
Cycles: 40000 Frameskip: 0
Athlon XP 2,4G
Linux 2.6.13-rc1, ALSA, ICE1724
Dynamic core.

Music and sound both work perfectly.
FM works best, but it works with MIDI too.
However, I have to route it through aseqview or there's some problem with dmix and I get no sound or no music.
Runs! With sound! (2005-02-08 21:11) Positronia
It is great to finally play the game with sound. Blending and multiple layers a bit slow.
Almost good to go... (2004-12-17 18:52) bumfodderboy
cycles:18,000 frameskip:0 detail:high

runs fine at high detail, sempron 2400+ w/256 pc3200 ram... if you have similar specs w/512 ram you *shuld* be able to run it on pentium...
Almost OK on 0.62 (2004-10-25 01:31) oldtimer
The game runs very well @ cycles 16000 on my Athlon 2500+, Pentium quality. Transparency effects and multiple layers still slow down the game a lot, but the only level in the game that really requires detail level to be turned down is Assassin (Episode 1 final). All other levels in the five episodes will play nice.

Minor glitches with in-game music, but it performs far better that with previous versions of DosBox. Strangely, it seems to be slowed down a lot when you get into the "Ship Specs" screen between levels.

Everything else is just OK.
Whee (2004-10-02 22:44) MaliceX
It's reluctantly faster on v0.62 now... smoother, but you may still have to either lower cycles or increase frameskip.
Running on Pentium quality does NOT help, and you may need a rather powerful computer to get it to run at full potential.
If all else, the music is a bit slow.
Friggin awesome. (2004-03-12 23:48) Helter Skelter
I've been trying to get this to work properly in XP for AGES.

With 0.61 at 15000 cycles and 0 frameskipon my Athlon XP 3000+ I can run the game in Turbo at Pentium detail most of the time quite smoothly. The only problems I get are odd slowdowns and funky music and sound in the menus and the setup program (though both are still quite usable). Otherwise it runs and plays great.

Keep up the excellent work!
Bit of a problem... (2004-03-02 13:42) Dred_furst
I suppose this problem is purely because dosbox isnt running fast enough yet, but i attempted to run tyrian2k on windows 2000 with an amd athlon 2000 XP+ and 256mb of ram, but i experienced quite a lot of slowdown and an "SDL" error when trying to run it fullscreen. the music and sound work except the play is too slow to be properly playable...

good luck with the speed problems...
Wow, finally (2004-02-07 09:18) Zell
I never gotten Tyrian 2000 to run with full sound, but now.... Anyways, work perfectly, setup right sound in setup and go. Slow in menus and the Destruct minigame, but works perfectly in-game with the right settings and a fast computer

CPU Cycles: 10000 (I think)
Detail level: high (but the lightining effects in dark levels will run extremly slow, reduce to low in these levels)
v0.61 much better, but (2004-02-05 15:23) SailorMax
but without sound effects... only music :(
in setup/jukebox stars draw above the text. I don't remember this effect... It seems to me, in DOS text was above stars.
and certainly, all works not so quickly as it would be desirable ;)
default settings, Game Detail: High, CPU Cycles: 7200, Frameskip: 0
One caveat... (2004-02-04 18:55) Iori Branford
The above settings will have to be played with a lot. The game likes to slow down on "dark" stages, where everything is dark except for a cone of light from your ship, so turn the game detail down further to make the stage fullbright.
Note: (2004-02-04 03:34) Iori Branford
Game Detail: High
Cycles: 5000
Frameskip: 2

Music tempo fluctuates a little.
