Runable Pirates (2016-08-30 01:04) WolfenBane
I found out how to run pirates in dosbox. After searching and purchasing the game from Humble Bumdle (but I think it will work on the abandonware pirates as well). When you first start dosbox run Loadfix before running pirates. Been playing for about 4 hours now and no problem.

Pirates! (2011-10-31 23:31) thepirategamerboy12
It runs a little slow but it's still very playable.
Stuck (2010-06-11 17:44) Wandrell
On 0.70 works, but not on 0.74. It gets stuck when reaching the first town.
Does no work on MacOSX (2009-05-29 05:26) pwiecz
The games hangs or crashes on MacOSX whenever you visit the governor. Visiting tavern also most probably crashes the game.
Booter version hangs even earlier - after selecting the controls.
Correction (2004-11-20 15:28) Spuzzum
That keyboard problem only seems to surface if you press any non-character key while entering your name.

Also, a virtual CPU speed of 1200 Hz seems to produce the best music, though you might want to bump it up to 1500 Hz to get it over with a little more quickly... ;-)
Not fully playable (2004-11-20 15:24) Spuzzum
The game runs fine, but it seems to use an irregular keyboard input method; the game appears to lock up -- the CPU remains responsive, but no input can be made -- once you reach the state where you are entering your name for a new captain.

Fortunately, the game can be run decently without DOSbox (though it has to use the real PC speaker then, and the music isn't queued to clock speed, producing noise). It's simple enough to create your captain, then save the game, and load it again through DOSbox, though it can be a little inconvenient.
