solved (2019-03-25 06:40) bavareze
solved... i figured out from youtube i had to use -t cdrom when mounting the drives
0.74-2 NFS crashing (2019-03-24 05:22) bavareze
installed from original CD; installation ok. when running I can see the dos4/gw logo and then the game exits (no graphics showing), and I am back to dosbox prompt. no error message whatsoever.
No acceleration (2018-10-07 04:04) xlife
The failure to accelerate once you reach 25MPH seems to be some sort of protection against changing the performance characteristics of the cars. It may also serve as a copy protection (it tries to write to a file which it expects to be on the CD). The specific file is SIMDATACARSPECSBY_R&T. If you set it to read-only then the cars should accelerate as normal.
Works fine in default DOSBos 0.74 (2013-06-04 09:20) clemenskaa
The problem was a corrupted installation. Re-installed it from CD and it works just fine. With UNIVBE and svga_et4000 even the videos will work.
No videos and weird acceleration bug (2013-05-29 09:32) clemenskaa
I use v0.74 and the videos don't work. It doesn't matter if I use UNIVBE or not ... But the game itself works even with a steering wheel. The only problem: I can't accelerate. Only in gear "n" the engine works. If I put in a gear, the car will accelerate to 25 mph and then instantly slow down.
freezing (2011-11-23 15:10) Phat_Tastic
on both versoin 0.73 and 0.74 the SE version of need for speed 1 installs fine for me, sets up sound blaster and videos work fine however the game stops loading when i goto race, it shows a car pic and then nothing... no matter if i use the -ioctl command for cd-rom mounting or not. i have read previous comments and even tryed changing the graphics card and loading univbe, (wow last time i loaded that exe i was running a 2mb cirrus logic). is there otherways i can get this to run?
Run Very Well, with some bugs (2011-11-07 12:35) Glitchologteam
Installing the game was perfect.

If you use Dosbox Defaults setting, the game will have some problem

1. All cutscene will be screwed
2. Sometime being caught by the police crash the game

Using AlienX99 idea, switching to SVGA_S3 in the dosbox option and using the Univbe program (putting it in the same folder as need for speed)

You need to activate the program before starting the game

There is a very weird bug that happen if you don't see the joystick ajust screen. The menu option will cycle by the game itself and the game will be unplayable.

If you see the joystick ajust screen when you start the game, you will be unable to configure anything but then you will be able to play keyboard and mouse without problem

help (2010-11-03 01:13) joshp
how do you not add the "-ioctl" when you run the installation?
Solution To Videos (2010-06-17 18:14) AlienX99
I Know! That Game Has A Bug On The Videos. So I Recommend That You Change The Machine From svga_s3 to svga_et4000 In DOSBox's Configuration. Then Download Univbe And Place It Where Need For Speed Special Edition Is Installed. Use Univbe Before Playing Need For Speed Special Edition. Without Univbe, You will have a problem with dosbox's screen resolution
Solution For madminne (2010-06-10 20:55) AlienX99
Hey madminne. change the machine to svga_et4000 and the videos will not screw up. then use univbe then play the game so the screen will fit the game resolution fairly.
Flawless (2010-05-21 22:53) AlienX99
Need For Speed: SE Works Flawlessly With Svga_et4000 And Univbe. Every Cutscene Is Perfect, It Barely slows down, And It Works Perfect. NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER! NO VIDEO SCREWUPS, NO OVERSIZED GAME DISPLAY, NO PROBLEMS!
Working great on MacBook (2009-11-23 15:11) starkos
Got it working on my MacBook Pro using Boxer (OSX DosBox frontend).Had to mount the CD folder with -ioctl flag as mentioned in comments in order to install, otherwise crashed during sound test. Set cycles at 60000. To use a wheel controller run JCU.EXE. I wrote it all up over here: http://industriousone.com/retro-racing-reboot in case it will help anyone.
Videos work fine (2009-10-30 10:28) jdenm8
I installed NFSSE on my laptop and experienced no problems whatsoever. It runs exactaly as I remember.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 (2.1Ghz)
ATI Radeon HD3200
4Gb RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
Compatibility is WRONG (2009-10-29 00:44) madminne2
LISTEN CAREFULLY !

ABOVE 0.63, THE INGAME VIDEOS ARE SCREWED UP !!!
Intro videos work fine, though.
The in-game speed in 0.73 is better, but it's not that much fun getting arrested and not seeing the f*****g cop ;-)
Also, the videos are a valuable game element and therefore the status of this game should be set to "playable", cause that's what it is.
By the way, version 0.65 plays fine (except the videos, as mentioned), I don't understand why it is stated as "broken" ... ?!
A Dosbox-King: want to help to get the vids working again in the next release ? ;-)

This is Need for Speed 1 SE! (2008-03-14 08:48) crnapika
for Pietry,

this game is the Need for Speed 1 Special Edition, released only on CD-ROM, published by EA, made by Pioneer, works only under DOS.

Here are some infos from Wikipedia:
"Another version of the game, called The Need for Speed: Special Edition, is based on the 1995 PC release of the game, and was released only for PC CD-ROM in 1996 It featured support for DirectX 2 and TCP/IP networking, two new tracks, and various enhancements in the game engine.

The Need for Speed and its Special Edition are the only games in the series to support DOS, as subsequent releases for the PC only run on Microsoft Windows 95 or above."

Regards,
cp
Windows (2008-01-16 17:13) Pietry
Its a Windows Executable;
= not supported for dosbox
Note: (2005-05-14 16:03) madminne
IMPORTANT: You must NOT add " -ioctl" when mounting your CD-ROM for this game, or else the installer will crash when testing the soundcard.
Game runs very well (even the videos :-DDD), but needs some special tunig.
Shut off every scaler, set CPU core=dynamic, set aspect=none, put frameskip=1, give it 38000 cycles for clicking through the menus, then increase to appr. 70000 cycles for racing (play around a bit).
In game hit F2 several times to see which graphics fit best for your system.
Fast CPU recommended.
My system:
Athlon 64 3000+
Win XP SP2
1 GB RAM
GeForce 6600 GT
MSI K8T Neo (1)

Tested on German version of NFSSE.
