Works fine but... (2011-11-03 17:01) KajQrd
The game itself seems to work just fine with the settings set to max. However the setup crashes on the max setting if you have a reasonably fast computer. And you have to run the setup to calibrate any joystick you would use. And furthermore I found that if I run the game at max and the setup with a fixed cycles count I get a joystick that just is off... So what I did was that I set the cycles to 150000 for both games and setup thus getting the setup to run and also get a reasonably fast game. By the way this game rocks with xbox 360 controller. Just use the keymapper to set the shoulder triggers to the first joystick up and down.
great! (2010-12-05 18:39) hjubal
It works like a charm!

DOSBox 0.74-1
Debian Squeeze/sid Gnu/Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 18:02:11 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Issue on 0.74 release (2010-08-12 12:02) ameno
Much slower than 0.73, same hardware/same dosbox config... :(
Runs Perfectly (2009-06-07 03:29) Chris
It runs flawlessly. I had no problems at all.
Setup and Map 5(Sunbeach Hill) tips (2008-09-19 16:32) Latsan
I had problems with being able to run the setup without the screen going blank and then exiting. This is on a laptop running Ubuntu, 2ghz dual core, dosbox 0.72

To fix this I set the cycles part in the dosbox config to a constant other than max, I put in 10000 and it is now stable but I am sure you could set it to run with more cycles.
[cpu]
core=dynamic
cycles=10000
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

Just make sure to revert back to cycles=max after you have run the setup.

If you want to run the map Sunbeach Hill without it crashing in SVGA mode then you will need to do the following -
Go into the screamer directory and then to the folder GFX. Make a backup of MAP5H.DAT and MAP5L.DAT, then rename the file MAP5L.DAT to MAP5H.DAT.
Sunbeach Hill will now have less detail in the background of the map but will still be in SVGA mode and will not crash. (Atleast it did not for me)

Hope this helps, this is my favorite game from childhood.
correction (2008-07-06 10:38) mykro
thats C: with a slash (this site strips them from comments)
could not find file (2008-07-06 10:37) mykro
If the game fails to run with the error "Could not find file", have a look in screamer.cfg. It probably contains some path other than "C:" (or the path that dosbox is mounting the game dir as).

Changing the content of screamer.cfg to "C: C" worked for me.

works with some crashes (2007-09-18 12:50) baconlorange
hi,#

for setup i need core dynamic and cycles max.
these are also good opitions for the game.

but i have to mount my cdrom this way (otherwise the game will not find the cdrom)
mount d f:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

Supported with v0.70. (2007-03-22 17:27) Neville
Now it works as well, if not better than in a real Pentium. On the issues that red_avatar mentions (crashes), I remember the original game crashing a lot in SVGA mode, and I had an original copy.
DB 0.66 RC3 (2007-02-25 13:16) red_avatar
Screamer runs nearly flawlessly. Even on hi-res with maximum amount of detail it's very playable on my Conroe E6600. I did notice that the game tends to be a bit unstable and crashes occasionally. I don't know if this is related to Dosbox or the game itself.
goes fine (2006-03-24 05:16) takysoft
latest CVS (AEP, 20060317)
dynamic core, 25000
it's a bit slow but playable.
don't try high resolution, start with startl.exe
1.7 ghz.
maybe on better cpu(2ghz+, or better 3ghz+) even high resolution mode(starth.exe) might be playable quite fine.

this game really needs performance.
Too slow (2004-10-11 02:37) mappoule
Could launch it, but still unplayable. Game too slow, very too slow on a P4 1,8Ghz with 768 Mo Ram.
Version Update (2004-05-09 14:20) Feltzkrone
Works in DOSBox 0.61, but too slow to call it playable for nowaday's machines. Tested with the german version (named "Bleifuss") on a P4 2400 MHz. Installed from CD.
Note: (2003-05-16 11:37) Tamentis
Need Protected Mode
