Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Final Unity is an adventure game based on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Published in 1995 by Spectrum HoloByte, the game uses a point-and-click interface and features an original story line, full-motion video, and the voices of the entire main cast from the television series.
Installation
The installer will not run properly with the default DOSBox settings. The issue is that the installer cannot always properly detect the speed of the CD-ROM and will either stop responding or not allow installation to proceed.
The following settings should allow the installer to work:
- The CD-ROM must be mounted with basic MSCDEX support only (no low-level support).
- The [cpu] section of dosbox.conf must have both of the following:
- core=normal or core=simple
- cycles=max
The speed test may need to be run more than once before it works. If the installer will still not work, try one or more of the following:
- Dismount any other drives that have been mounted with MSCDEX support.
- Copy the files from the CD-ROM to a folder on the harddrive, mount the folder with basic MSCDEX support, and run the installer from there.
- Copy the data track from the CD-ROM to a .iso file, use the IMGMOUNT command to mount the .iso file (use "-t iso" when mounting), and run the installer from there.
Again, the speed test may need to be run more than once before it works.
Setup
The setup utility requires that the CD-ROM be mounted with basic MSCDEX support. Otherwise, no special settings are required. The sound and video autodetection should work without any problems.
Running The Game
The game requires the same settings as the installer, except that cycles=auto may be used instead of cycles=max in the dosbox.conf file. Also, it is important not to use core=auto or core=dynamic while playing because it will cause the game to crash when the tactical station is used. With a proper setup, the game will run without any problems.
