Works with DOSBox 0.74 (2022-02-27 06:07) retrogamefan22
I'm running DOSBox 0.74-3 on Linux and it works fine - I also experienced the color palette problem on the level intro screen, but I found changing the machine type to vgaonly did the trick - you have to edit the dosbox config file using a text editor.

I also had to use a hex editor to edit the russell.dat file in order to circumvent the copy protection check, I used GHex for Linux which is available from the Software Manager in Linux Mint.

I first played this when I was about 8 or 9 years old and that was 30 years ago - it's still a great game, but very addictive!

Lemmings Disk 1 not found Error (2013-03-09 21:15) McWulff
Hi,
for all with the error "Lemmings Disk 1 not found".The Error occurs because of the Copy Protection "keydisk" on the floppy disks. You can handle the Error by editing the file "Russel.dat" with an HexEdior at your installation folder. The important byte is the first byte 0000.This contains a switch to determine if the "keydisk" check is needed or not.A Value of 09 indicates a floppy check, it the normal value after the first installation. If you have unexact copies of your Lemmings Disks, the Error occurs. A value of 00 to 08 indicates a "keydisk" check is not needed. To fix the game, use the Hex Editior to change the byte to 00.Fixing this Byte lasts for the the first time you start the game, but each time you run Lemmings, the program adds 1 to this byte, until 09 is reached and the "keydisk" check will then be required again.Run Lemmings once (to get the other bytes correct),then on exit, enter ATTRIB -H +R RUSSELL.DAT at the DOS prompt, to make the file READ-ONLY, preventing the byte being updated.
Still returns to the title screen under 0.73 (2010-01-02 18:53) natomi
I'm using Windows XP and Dosbox 0.73 with "vgaonly" as adviced by DragonsLover. If, in game, you kill all lemmings using the mass explosion button, then a left mouse click on the results screen (to retry the level) goes to the title screen instead. However, the left mouse click seems to work correctly whenever a level is successfully completed.

It can be worked around by unfullscreening (alt-enter) before the left mouse click and then fullscreening (alt-enter) after the click.
Won't recognize floppy (2009-09-14 03:53) rytomi
I have in the config file

mount a a: -t floppy

and I put the Lemmings floppy in the drive, but I keep getting the message:

"Lemmings Disk 1 not found. Insert into drive A or B and retry. Exiting Lemmings..."

I even installed it in DosBox but it won't run. Any ideas or work arounds?
Works perfectly under Dosbox 0.73 (2009-08-19 09:43) DragonsLover
To avoid getting the palette color problem between levels under Dosbox 0.73, just set the machine type to "vgaonly". The mouse cursor bug that causes the game to return to the intro screen each time seems also to be gone under that version. Works also like a charm by using the High Performance PCs mode if just that you may get a little weird coloured line at the bottom of the level screen. Just change the cycles to get rid of it. Also, if the Adlib sounds and musics are weird, set the oplrate to 49716. Have fun!
Dosbox 0.73 (2009-05-29 20:14) Napostriouf
Still have some glitches between levels! However, the game itself works fine!
Few bugs... (2008-12-24 18:59) Wolfengoose
In the edited version, I think there's a mouse error on the title screen, because the results screen of the level (where it shows how many lemmings were saved, etc.) doesn't seem to respond to left clicks.

It does, however, respond to right clicks (bringing me back to the title screen, which isn't too bad because the music sticks).

strangely, the sound and music seem to be of lower quality, especially the higher tones. It sounds kind of screechy.

Other than that it works great.
Dosbox 0.72 (2008-12-23 16:47) Shadow_Chaser14
I'm having a few problems with running Lemmings under 0.72. One is the problem mentioned above by Tjuderl. Another is that the game always returns to the title screen after each level, instead of going to the next one. Also, occasionally it will show a black screen on the title screen except where a button is such as "1 Player" or "New Level".
Weird Colour Palette. (2008-11-25 06:06) Tjuderl
The colours are messed up whenever I'm on a level intro screen, before every level starts. Anything besides that, the game works just fine.
I'll try it (2008-11-17 05:20) guineapig
Thanks for the tip, RenHoek - I'll try running it in windowed mode and see if it works.
works in window mode (2008-09-21 13:46) RenHoek
The problem guineapig and I are having seems to go away if I DON'T run the gamefull screen. How about for you, guineapig?
corrected version? (2008-09-21 13:31) RenHoek
I'm having the same problem as guineapig.
Excpe that it happens every level for me.
I tried downloading the 'corrected version' suggested by DragonsLover, but the problem still occurs.
Also happenes in Oh No! More Lemmings too.
Does anyone have any more ideas about how to fix it?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Music Skipping (2008-04-19 01:48) bjcharles83
Lemmings, Oh No! More Lemmings and Holiday Lemmings 1993/1994 work great using 0.65.. they do rarely crash to the title screen... not a huge problem for me, as I right-click to unfreeze and left-click to continue playing (also works if I minimize and maximize DosBox. HOWEVER... the music skips often (sounds like it wants to stop for a second) and it's very annoying, how can I resolve this?
Re: Help! (2007-12-06 23:53) DragonsLover
You're not using the corrected version of the game. You can get it there: http://it.travisbsd.org/lemmings/lemmingswelt/?cmd=get&file=/LemmingsCorrected.zip
Enjoy!
Help! (2007-11-18 22:02) guineapig
I am having an annoying problem with my Lemmings game. For some reason, the game tends to crash to the default title screen after I've clicked on one of the "level preview" screens to begin the level. This usually occurs around level 4, but sometimes I've been able to get as high as level 9 or 10 before the crash occurs. It's not really a "bad" crash to so speak; it just sends me to the title screen. However, I don't like this because it makes the music track re-start for Lemmings, and I like hearing the music tracks in the right order...yes, I know I'm picky, but it really annoys me when the music re-starts due to the title screen crash. I've tried lots of things already - changing certain entries in the dosbox.conf file, mounting a different drive letter, changing the game resolution...and this stupid crash still occurs. If anyone knows anything that will help me prevent this random crash from occurring and re-starting my music, I'd truly appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.
High Performance PCs mode now works! (2007-03-24 22:24) DragonsLover
It is now possible to play the game using the High Performance PCs mode without any troubles under Dosbox 0.70!

slr1226: I don't know. You will probably need a hacked version of the executable to make the game works.
DB 0.70 (2007-03-04 02:01) red_avatar
Start this game with cycles lower than 7000 or you won't have sound or music. Also, the mission screen (which tells you how many lemmings have to be saved) is graphically messed up because of a palette incompatibility problem.
Still won't recognize floppy (2007-01-10 14:00) slr1226
DragonsLover wrote "Try: mount A A:\ -t floppy mount C C:\Lemmings Then type Vgalemmi. To be sure that the game works, try to install the game under Dosbox." I did this and when Lemmings starts up it says "Lemmings Disk 1 not found. Insert into drive A or B and retry. Exiting Lemmings...." even though the Lemmings floppy is in there. Lemmings 1992 always checked for the floppy to make sure that the player had a legitament floppy. What can be done?
Dosbox 0.65 (2006-12-10 13:51) red_avatar
Make sure the amount of cycles is low enough or you won't get any sound.
Because... (2006-10-21 23:12) DragonsLover
Triplesguy : Did you mount your CD-ROM drive using -t cdrom?
Also, be sure not to select "High Performance PC" mode but VGA mode.

Blackbird : you must mount your floppy drive as floppy (A:). Try:
mount A A:\ -t floppy
mount C C:\Lemmings
Then type Vgalemmi. To be sure that the game works, try to install the game under Dosbox.
Won't recognize floppy (2006-07-13 19:01) Blackbird7524516
I try doing this:

Z:\>mount C C:\LEMMINGS -t floppy
Z:\>C:
Z:\>VGALEMMI

And the game says that Disk 1 is inexistant. I installed the game from the original Lemmings floppy. What is going on?
works fine with dosbox 0.65 (2006-04-10 13:46) Jue
It works fine with 0.65 just be careful NOT to set cycles above 3000, or you won't have any music !
