works great! I use 20,000 cpu cycles (2010-05-07 19:34) GreenMonkey
Tip: to get the CD music working correctly: you need to rip the CD as a cue (see the FAQ).

I used these params:
mount F "F:" -t cdrom -IOCTL
imgmount e "D:<filepath>BAK.cue" -t iso -fs iso
Stuck at "loading... please wait" screen? (2009-12-17 21:12) Elvan

oplrate=22050
Works without a problem (2009-12-14 04:54) Ozzie
Recently I played the as freeware released version of the game in the newest stable DosBox build.
It worked perfectly, without a problem!
BaK and Win Vista (2008-06-18 13:36) Kya
I just recently download DOSbox hoping to play an old favorite. I still have the CD-ROM of BaK and I have DOSbox mounted to play CD-ROMs; however, when I put my disk of BaK in - my Vista program treats it like DVD-R and says it's an audio only disk. Any suggestions on how I might fix this problem - or where I can find a downloadable version of the game?
Free Download Version - 0.72 - Runs (2007-09-10 12:56) CharlesKay
I am trying the version released to the public by Sierra/Dynamix (v1.00, I have yet to patch it). I am using DOSBox 0.72 official on an Athlon XP 2400+, running it directly through the DOSBox shell. In addition, I'm using the Munt MT-32 Emulator Windows XP driver and routing the MIDI through that. Though I have not progressed through too much of the game at present (though I have completed the game before so know what to be looking for), I can thus far detect no abnormalities in the gameplay. In addition, the Munt driver works well (the lengthy game start time, I know, is attributed to the lengthy MT-32 SysEx download and is not a bug), offering me a chance to play the game as I never could before.
Works great with 0.70 (2007-07-16 21:25) Marian
I have the CD version and the game runs very well. What a thrill to finally be able to play this game again! Thank you so much, guys!!
Works fine with 0.65 (2007-01-09 15:50) acheron
Parameters I changed:
output=surface
priority=higher,lower
memsize=64
frameskip=0
aspect=false
scaler=normal2x
core=dynamic
cycles=25000
xms=true
ems=true
umb=true

25000 cycles is enough most of the time. Everything is smooth, unless you try to run through a corn field.
patch (2006-01-27 02:53) davepyne
If you are unable to patch the game like I was, you can download a pre-patched version 1.02 here http://www.dimwood.net/game.html

You can tell if you have version 1.02 by pressing "n" on the overhead map view. If doing this toggles the arrow rotating and the map staying still vs the map rotating and the arrow staying pointed up, then you have version 1.02. This version also fixes many instances where the game freezes.
Your game does not have enough free memory to run (2006-01-17 21:50) BDog
I can't get the game to start because apparently I don't have enough xms memory available...I tried to fix this in the executable file, but it did nothing...can someone email me to let me know how I can get this amazing RPG to work?

Got it workking fine (2006-01-11 04:37) Stephen_of_Stardock
I've just got the game running quite well. First, I also had problems with speed, or, when I set CPU cycles to 40K, with sound. But it's all over! My settings are Memory 63M, no XMS, CPU Core Dynamic, Frame Skip 2 and NO scale. With these, I can play the game at its normal speed with the sound at mere 10K Cycles. I hope this helps other adcenturers as well to play this great game.
The game runs okay... (2005-10-31 19:28) Quicksilver6
But it seems to be really, really choppy. Any advice on how I stop it from hiccupping all the time? I've tried upping the frame skip, but that doesn't help at all. I don't know what to do.
Get it to run (2005-05-01 17:26) Biges
If you have problem running the game, try to edit Drive.cfg file - change the letters to the ltter of the drive where BaK is installed.

v0.62 Works Perfectly (2004-09-30 10:55) teshia
Haven't tried this in 0.61 but running it for the first time in 0.62 works perfectly. I'm using floppy version on a P4-2800 with 512 MB RAM and the following settings: machine=svga, cycles=15000 (found it crashed when it was set at 30000, which I guess makes it think it's running on a processor that's too much for it), sblaster=true, xms=false, ems=true. After that you run INSTALL.EXE and set the sound card to Sound Blaster. When running the game, the "loading please wait" message appeared for six seconds, then faded to black and the game started. Combat works well, as does every other feature of the game.
Slow (2004-09-10 10:15) capt20
I love this game. Seriously, best ever, and I've had trouble getting it to run on Windows 9x, much less now Windows XP. Finnaly, after finding a download, I find that I can run it with DOSBox. The only problem is, however, that it runs terribly slow, almost too slow to be playable (In full screen, even slower). I've tried the two things in the beginning (Increasing the CPU cycles and frame rate) But that doesn't seem to be connected to the problem. Can anyone help me with this?
Wait a while! (2004-06-15 12:42) Sashanan
Those who got stuck at the "loading...please wait" screen, leave it open a while! I initially thought it wouldn't go beyond there too, but I left it open a few minutes today and sure enough, suddenly it did go through to the title screen. From the looks of it it just takes a while.

Regarding speech: BaK has some short speech samples upon meeting certain key characters, but most of it is text only.
100% ? (2004-06-05 18:23) Iarnvidhr
i used db ,worked perfectly. then i thought "uh? they don't talk? i only see text!", so i tried it in my pure dos part. and nothing there either... so, i guess Krondor just has NO speech at all ?
Works great (2004-04-19 12:49) qmrq
I played for ten hours last night with no problems. Mount a drive, then mount CD-ROM, and run install program.
