Better with 0.63 for me (2006-09-15 07:59) Nwart
In fact, on my system, Daggerfall run slightly faster with dosbox v0.63.

I have an athlon 64 3200+ (2GHz).

I can set dosbox to 18000 cycles with 0.63, seems nearly full-speed, and only 17000 with 0.65. The only problem with this settings are slightly choppy videos, but rest of the game is normal.
If I use higher settings, sound stutters.

Don't use dynamic core in 0.63, because it's really buggy with DF (bad textures + crashes).
Works absolutly perfectly now :) (2006-04-13 13:28) gord
Using the latest version (0.65 as of now) dosbox can play Daggerfall at _reasonable_ speeds. make sure to set your 'output' to overlay, opengl or openglnb and the core to 'normal' (dynamic is a little slow).

also make sure you'v updated to the latest patch as one thing this game is knowen for is its bugs.

on my 1.8ghz its not running at absolutly perfect speed, but its definatly playable.
Fine in XP, bad in OS X (2005-08-24 19:05) panphage
Thepal has it right, use the XP installer and dosbox will run fall.exe perfectly.

When I run the installer on Mac OS X.4 (Tiger) on a 1.67 powerbook with 128MB VRAM, dosbox crashes: "Exit to error: Illegal descriptor type 0 for int E"

Bummer.

I've gotten this working fairly well. Still need to optimize. I was able to completely avoid using Windows, while avoiding DosBox installation issues, by installing via Wine. The openning animations for installations were /very/ slow; I ate dinner while waiting for the splash screen to fade in and out. The copying of files very quickly, however. Used the simple no CD instructions found on The UESP.

Played just fine, using DosBox of course, with optimization issues already discussed below. Got it tweaked to playable.
Works, but... (2005-02-25 23:42) Nwart
Awfully slow... When you try to set the CPU cycles, do it running around in a town: with my 1,8 GHz CPU occupation reach 100% at 10,000 cycles (DOSBOX v0.63).
Too bad dynamic core doesn't work (yet?) for this game (bad textures), for Arena, it was perfect.
oh and btw (2005-02-14 16:09) Yamagata
don't get me wrong i think that dosbox is the most brilliant idea ever
Daggerfall (2005-02-14 16:07) Yamagata
As happy i am to be able to play daggerfall in dosbox wich is wery much...however when i think back to when i played it the first time on a 266mhz machine with win98 i was getting much better framerates..than im gettin with my 2.8 ghz with winXP..at times i really hate windows xp yet i cant stop using it..I miss the old days of dos :Þ
works fine (2005-02-04 12:52) kuber
daggerfall works pretty fine.
mount the cd with mount d d:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
assuming that d is your cdrom-drive under dosbox amd in your OS ans assuming the is is your first cd-drive and using win2k/xp
then start daggerfall with fall.exe z.cfg
Runs OK, don't expect miracles (2005-01-14 21:02) Scharmers
This game is pretty much the upper limit of what DosBox can support right now. A bear to install, lots of graphic anomolies (texture warping), and even less stable than usual. Did I mention slow? But I imagine a 3.0 Ghz CPU might be able to handle it.
Work perfectly for me on 0.63 (2004-12-13 21:59) Thepal
You just need to follow a few steps:

To install under Windows XP you might need to use this: http://files.filefront.com/dagnt5x/;900719;;/fileinfo.html

Next, follow the steps here to get it running without the CD: http://www.uesp.net/dagger/daghack.shtml#nocd

You should now be able to start it by typing FALL Z.CFG (instead of DAGGER)

Once in the menu the cursor mightn't be moving with the mouse. If so, press CTRL-F10. Once in the game you just need to get the CPU speed to a good level (using CTRL-F11 and CTRL-F12. I have mine set to about 15500 since that works with most games)

Everything should work perfectly.
0.62 (2004-11-08 23:01) IAmTheRad
Do not use dynamic CPU using 0.62. It crashes when loading a save game. Speed increase in 0.62 anyways.
speed tips (2004-10-27 09:11) Mac
You probably know these already, but they're vitally important for 3D games like this:

*1* Do NOT use "output=surface". Any other output willl get you a 2X speed increase.

*2* Make sure you're running the newest DOSbox (of course)

*3* Try out the "cpu=dynamic" for another roughly 2X speed increase.

*4* Make sure you tune the cycles to work with your machine. Run in a window and have a CPU load monitor active. Try to hover around 95%, so that you can handle unusual circumstances. Do NOT just accept the default 3000, and do NOT just keep cranking it higher. Use CTRL-F12 and CTRL-F11 to adjust while the game is running, and when you find a good setting (in console window or main window's title bar), store that permanently in your dosbox.conf file.

Using these I have gotten Daggerfall to run fairly smoothly on a 2.4GHz P4 with 0.61. Need to try again with 0.62. I don't use frameskip - I'm trying to get my framerate up, so frameskip defeats the purpose.
Daggerfall works now... =) (2004-09-18 10:27) samtam90
I've simply re-installed DosBox and the fuck** "Pagefault didn't correct table" error has gone to the death. Bye, bye error! =) =)
crash in 0.61! (2004-09-18 05:20) samtam90
noooooooo.... Daggerfall crash with error "Pagefault didn't correct!" HELP!!!!!!
0.61 (2004-05-14 13:26) IAmTheRad
Everything works, except cd. Must install from outside dosbox. Use a no-cd to make it work. Playable on fast computers.
0.61 (2004-02-18 18:27) Sekhara
runs for me, but too slowly to really play it... midi works but not digital sound... won't run from cd, had to use nocd
