Fixing SVGA-support & slow menu music (2022-01-01 11:17) bgh
The configuration below worked for me in DOSBox 0.74-3, but there were a few issues. The fixes for these issues are provided at https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=30121:

- Slow menu music

Running speed.exe with the command line argument -novbl fixes this.

- Game runs in VGA (320x200) instead of SVGA (640x400).

When SVGA is selected in the game settings, the game is supposed to switch to the higher resolution when you start the race, which does not happen.
Apparently some versions of the game recognize only VESA 1.2 for the graphics. Setting machine=vesa_oldvbe fixes this issue.

So in summary, the config that works for me is:

[dosbox]
machine=vesa_oldvbe
memsize=31
[cpu]
core=dynamic
cycles=max
[sblaster]
sbtype=none
[gus]
gus=true

And then run speed.exe including the -novbl argument:
speed -novbl

Phew!

"Max cycles over throttles the game and contributes to the stuttering. Setting cycles to 60000 gave me smooth gameplay with no stuttering at all."

Thanks a lot. This fixed it. I never considered max cycles to be the problem, as most guides out there say not to mess with the "core" and "cycles" settings, and the settings from Napostriouf recommended max cycles (great guide otherwise, thanks to you too).

This game (speed haste) is a pretty lame, but I had it on my first PC (which had no sound card) and I wanted to run it with sound and no stuttering just once in my life.
don't use MAX cycles (2012-07-24 13:48) exofreeze
Max cycles over throttles the game and contributes to the stuttering. Setting cycles to 60000 gave me smooth gameplay with no stuttering at all.
Game skips (2011-09-28 16:24) kurkosdr
Game skips when playing (not the kind of skipping you get when the fps are low, more like the kind of slipping you get from a scratched CD, only it happens both with audio and graphics). It's not because of a slow CPU because the same amount of skipping happens whether you set the graphics to 640x480 and full textures/detail/polygons or 320x240 and lowest setting for textures/detail/polygons. Also happens with the recommended posted above.

I think the "supported" rating for this game should be turned down a notch.
Setting that you must (2010-09-11 15:11) Napostriouf
Ok, this game is fully running, but require a lot of CPU usage. So be sure to have a modern CPU if you want to play full resolution with all the music and sound.

Here's the setting to maximise your experience with the game:

Memsize=31
Core=dynamic (or you can let it to auto as anyway it gonna auto set dynamic)
cycles=max (Don't set a number owertise the game gonna freeze)
sbtype=none (as the Sound Blaster setting for THIS game have some problem in dosbox, but the other sound card run without any problems)
gus=true

And now be sure ingame to set the setup to set Gravis Ultrasound instead Sound Blaster.

The game runs pretty well - demands a lot of CPU power though and the sound does stutter but this may be a side effect of lacking enough CPU power.
Working for me (2008-02-27 21:54) angrylion
Works well in 0.72 with core=dynamic, cycles=max plus "Soundcard" set to none in the game's setup program.
Not working (2007-10-23 02:08) kungpao
Same as 0.65, crash after bumper screens. Either regressed or config-specific.
Note: (2006-04-09 16:54) chckens
Hangs immediately after displaying developer/publisher logos. Should be displaying a flame effect at this point. Illegal read/write errors spewed to the console
