Working Perfectly (2011-09-18 13:19) Glitchologteam
Everything went well installing and playing that game. It is working perfectly without changing any option in the dosbox configuration file
Problems with SOUND.GOB (2010-11-08 12:37) TalonKarrde
I successfully installed the (Spanish) version.
I had a little problem. During installation within DOS-Box, I got this message - Imposible leer c:darksounds.gob (impossible to read ...). I continued installation, and could play, but without music and effects during the game (The clipscenes sounded fine).
In Windows I could see that the valid sounds.gob file I had copied had turned into a 0-byte file.
If you have this problem, what you have to do is:

1. Within Dos-Box, run install.exe as described by Shoal, and proceed as he says until you get the "impossible to read message".
2. Using ALT-TAB, go to Windows. Copy sounds.gob again into the DARK subdirectory
3. ALT-TAB back into Dos-Box, continue installation normally.

It should work just fine.
Dark Forces (2008-12-10 05:30) Shoal
I read the suggestions above but they missed something key. For the sake of completion, here's everything I did to get the game running well:

Copy the "DARK" directory from the CD to your hard drive, and then place the "INSTALL.EXE" file from the CD *inside* the DARK directory.

In DOSBox, mount the CD-ROM drive and have the CD in drive as Dark Forces will look for the CD when it runs.

Run the INSTALL.EXE file form inside the DARK hard drive directory and set up sound. If you try to run INSTALL.EXE from off the CD or anywhere else outside the DARK directory, it won't work. (You don't have to go through the INSTALL.EXE song and dance, but if you don't you'll have a nice and silent game.)

Settings:

DOSBox 0.72
CPU Type = Dynamic
CPU Cycling = 16000

The game runs like a dream.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm running Mac OS X Leopard on a MacBook with the Dapplegrey frontend.

If you're using a Mac like I am, be sure to restore normal Function Key usage in Keyboard & Mouse preferences.
No Sound (2008-03-09 02:26) Joker41NAM
The game plays well, but I have no sound. Can anybody help?
I Tested it on DOSBox 0.72 and... (2007-09-08 02:18) VollachR
The game works but it is a bit laggy, especially the sound, I managed to get the sound lags to minimum using manually editing the dosbox config file, saving it under a new name and playing with it till it works the best I could, of course, it might be related to hardware and not dosbox, I didn't try the game on any version prior to 0.71, got the same results, frontend programs such as D.O.G or Dfend did not let me set everything the way I needed to make the game work best and it is still laggy anyhow, you mostly get laggy sound when skipping movies and picking up items.
OK with 0.70, but F1 key causes freeze (2007-03-25 15:16) fletch622
Original DOS version plays exceptionally well under 0.70 on MacOS X 10.4.9. However, I have noticed that during extensive game play, pressing the F1 key to bring up inventory/menu/map options freezes the game, halting it to a black screen. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work - one must return to the Finder and close the window.

Since this game never offered Save options (until a mission was completed), this bug could prove to be slightly irritating when coming close to completing a level and needing info from the F1 screen to complete the mission... and subsequently crashing the game.
0.63 (2004-12-16 10:42) Mephisto1982
plays fine, but cd installer broken. copying over the "dark" folder from cd to hd works. if you get an error about local.msg, make sure you have enabled write permission on all files.
gameplay seems slower then i remembered, but my memory might be wrong though.
OK with 0.61 (2004-02-28 22:23) Scharmers
Plays fine. Install routine broken; copy game dir AND install exe from CD to a directory and run install from that directory to configure sound. Wintel users shouldn't bother -- game runs OK in Windows (including XP) as long as you have Windows audio legacy drivers.
